Another Reason For Health

Cancer. The word is scary, and the disease affects most people in some way. I lost my dad to cancer. He was only 54. He never lived to meet his first grandchild or to walk my sister down the aisle. I miss him every day. As I passed a milestone birthday last summer (40), that “C” word has popped up more times. I have other friends with sick parents or have lost parents to cancer. I now have a dear friend from high school who was just dealt the diagnosis of breast cancer. Pretty scary words to a woman who is newly divorced, the mother of 3 and ready to start a new chapter of her life. This is not part of the unwritten script she had planned. Jen had been coming over to my house about once a week for awhile to workout with me. She made the “mistake” of asking me about my exercise program, and I invited her over for a personal butt whooping:) When I got the email from her that her biopsy results came back positive for breast cancer, I fell to my knees. It hurts me deeply to have a friend faced with this. What makes it scarier is how much I can relate to this. I’m a mom. I have 3 kids. I am 40.

A group of us who love Jen have decided to do our part and rally around her. We will all be walking or running in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Columbus on May 19. All of the plans are not ironed out yet, but I do know this much: The day will be emotional, but a reminder of how precious our health is. I’m excited to walk this walk with girls from my childhood, friends from adulthood and to share it with my 13 year old daughter.

I am not planning on walking or running this race for speed. I know some of the girls who are joining us are not exercisers (…yet! Wait until I get a hold of them for 3 miles!). I am hoping that during the time that we have together, I can encourage others to do more for their own health-eat a little better, prep a lot more and make exercise a priority!

Of course, “Jen’s Warriors” are looking to raise as much money as possible! I’m attaching a link to this entry. I have a goal of how much I would like to earn for this event, but would love to beat it! I can’t wait to blog after the race and tell you all how it went!
